FPW Media, a comprehensive digital marketing agency and creative studio in Springfield, Ore., has become carbon neutral to do its part in helping the environment. With the transition to digital platforms, agencies can build up a large carbon footprint, so FPW’s leadership decided to look internally to see what the company could do on an individual level to reduce its carbon footprint. FPW has always worked to partner with vendors who are committed to offsetting some or all of their carbon emissions, but this isn’t always possible. FPW going carbon neutral allows the company to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in its own way while continuing to hold our vendors accountable.
FPW is also fortunate to be based in an area where a vast majority of our power comes from renewable sources for our office and manufacturing. The company receives its power from the Springfield Utility Board, which purchases 83% of its electricity from hydroelectric sources that generate renewable energy through the use of moving water.
Since most of the electricity used to operate our facilities comes from hydropower, FPW media uses electric dryers within its screen printing operations in spite of natural gas dryers being cheaper to operate. FPW’s warehouses also feature LED lighting and high-efficiency production equipment that uses less power and lasts much longer.
Many of FPW’s clients are in industries that are thinking about their environmental impact and how they can become better stewards of the environment. Owen Garitty, FPW’s Founder and Lead Creative, wants to ensure we mirror our client’s commitment to carbon neutrality:
“Our clients have a deep commitment to sustainability and have been pushing their partners to come up with solutions to their collective carbon footprint in their operations. Something we can now offer to our clients as another level of service is that, when they do marketing with us, they know our operations are carbon neutral.”
FPW has partnered with Carbon Fund to sequester carbon from the atmosphere through methods such as forestry, energy efficiency and renewable energy. This is achieved with carbon offsets that reduce carbon emissions to compensate for released emissions. To purchase its carbon offsets, FPW calculated its use in metric tonnes of electricity, heating fuels, air and rail travel emissions, and car business travel emissions. This was used to find both the carbon footprint in pounds and offset costs per employee which determined the company’s total offset.
